I am Doug Stainbrook, the artist behind Sly Fox
Art Pyrography. After many years of drawing, oil painting,
artistic engraving, and wood working, I finally found what I was
looking for in the art of pyrography. For me it is the
most enjoyable and fulfilling artform I have discovered.
The reason we call it pyrography, and not just
wood burning, is because there are many other mediums that can
be artistically burned other than wood. My favorite
things to burn are wood, leather and heavy paper.
I started my journey in pyrography in October of
2017. I signed up for a 3-day class in Townsend, TN that
was taught by one of the most renown pyrographers in the
country,
Michele Parsons. She
taught me the basics of pyrography through hands-on projects,
where I learned about the burning equipment and basic burning
techniques. From there, I took off with pyrography on my own and
have never looked back. Since beginning to sell
my pyrography in early 2018, I have sold over 500 burnings.
One of my proudest accomplishments back in 2020 was
to be recognized in
Pyrography magazine with one of my wood
burnings from quarantine. The editor saw my submission after
soliciting for input to the article on their Facebook page. She
reached out to me and I was thrilled to be chosen as one of the
features in the magazine article.
